Furniture refers to functional pieces such as sofas, tables and cabinets, while home decor covers the smaller, mostly decorative items, such as cushions, vases, lamps, mirrors and artwork, that personalise a space. Home decor is generally easier and less costly to change than furniture.

Repeating a small number of colours, materials or finishes, such as a timber tone, a metal accent or a neutral palette, across different rooms helps a home feel connected. It's not necessary to use identical pieces in every room, just a consistent thread running through them.

Lighting, artwork and a well-chosen mirror tend to have a strong visual impact for relatively little cost or effort. Cushions and a rug can also change the feel of a room quickly, particularly in living and dining spaces.
