A complete dining setting usually starts with a dining table and enough dining chairs to seat your household comfortably. Many dining rooms also include a wine cabinet or buffet for storage, and a rug underneath the table to define the space, depending on the room's size and layout.

The number of chairs depends on the table length and chair width. Allow roughly 55-60 cm of table width per person as a starting point, and check the table-leg or base position, since pedestal and trestle bases can allow more chairs to fit than a four-legged design.

Not necessarily. Bar stools are generally used at a kitchen island or raised bench rather than a standard dining table. Some homes use both, with the dining table for meals and bar stools for casual seating or entertaining, while others only need one or the other.

They don't have to match exactly. Pairing a timber or stone table with upholstered chairs in a contrasting or complementary colour is a common way to add texture, while a fully matched setting creates a more traditional, coordinated look. Repeat at least one finish to connect the pieces.

Measure the dining space and leave around 90 cm of clearance where possible between the table edge and the walls or nearby furniture, so chairs can be pulled out and people can move around the table comfortably. Marking the table and chair footprint on the floor helps confirm the fit before ordering.

A wine cabinet is optional and depends on how much you entertain and how you like to store glassware, bottles and serving pieces. It can sit alongside a dining table and chairs as additional storage, or be left out of smaller or more casual dining spaces.
