Bar Stools

For a standard kitchen bench around 90 cm high, a counter stool with a seat height around 62-65 cm is usually suitable. Aim for roughly 25-30 cm between the seat and underside of the benchtop, and measure your own bench before ordering.

Counter stools are designed for standard kitchen benches and usually have lower seats. Bar stools are taller and suit raised bar counters. The easiest way to choose is to measure from the floor to the underside of your counter and allow comfortable legroom.

Allow around 60 cm of width per person as a starting point. Wider upholstered stools, armrests or swivel mechanisms may need additional space so people can sit down, turn and move without bumping into one another.

Leave enough space for each person to sit and move comfortably. Around 15-20 cm between the edges of standard stools can work, but wider stools or designs with arms may need more. Always calculate from the actual stool width.

Swivel stools are convenient in open-plan kitchens because users can turn without dragging the entire chair. Fixed stools can feel more stable and may be better where space is tight. Check the clearance needed for any swivel base before buying.

Armrests can improve comfort but also increase the overall width and may stop the stool from fitting underneath the bench. Measure the arm height, stool width and available counter space before choosing an armed design.
